Protecting Your Cigars Made Easier With Proper Hygrometer Calibration
Well, now that you have your humidor, what about the hygrometer calibration? Your hygrometer may look nice and make quite the fashion statement, but without calibration, it won't be of much use. The most accurate method for hygrometer calibration is to...

• Take a spoon filled with salt and moisten it with a few drops of water. Take care not to dissolve the salt. • Place the spoon with the hygrometer in a plastic container with a well-sealed lid. • After about 8 hours the humidity will be 75%. Adjust the hygrometer needle with a small (very small) screwdriver to 75%. Please note that over half the hygrometers I have had are impossible or nearly impossible to adjust. In these cases, note the difference between what the hygrometer reads and 75%. Factor in this difference when checking the humidity in your cigar humidor. Now.... For you impatient types that don't want to wait for 8 hours to do your calibration.... • Wrap your hygrometer in an extremely moist cloth. • After 1 hour, adjust the hygrometer to 96%. Again, if you are unable to adjust your hygrometer, note the difference between what it is reading and 96%. Just do the math when figuring the actual humidity. The moist cloth method isn't as accurate as the first method, but it will get you in the ballpark.
Unless you like burning money, like our friend in the picture, take the time to properly protect your Macanudo cigar collection and other valuable smokes. So you see.... calibration isn't so hard after all. I think you (actually we) deserve a cigar after this!
