Is Cigar Humidor Maintenance Really That Important?
You bet it is!...
Without proper cigar humidor maintenance, the best equipment in the world for cigar storage means nothing. Make sure you have the discipline to monitor your cigar humidor. If you don't, it'll be a very sad day indeed when you open your humidor to find the dried out remains of what used to be your Fonseca cigar collection. Even worse, discover that you unwittingly invited all your tobacco beetle friends over to munch on you're moldy white cigars....yummy! A tear or two certainly will be shed when dumping out your precious cigars. Cigar humidor maintenance is easy. As a rule of thumb, the ideal conditions are 70 degrees fahrenheit and 70% humidity. This is an industry standard.
If you can keep your humidor temperature between 60 and 75 degrees and the humidity between 65 and 75%, your cigars should be fine. If the temperature or the humidity climb to 80 or above, you are risking the hatching of the tobacco beetle. These can and will destroy your entire stock. Get the temperature and the humidity under control within 24 hours to avoid these nasty little devils. This will also help prevent mold growth. If you have just purchased a humidor, follow these simple steps.... • Read our hygrometer calibration page for how to properly set your hygrometer. • Take a clean cloth moistened with distilled water and wipe down the entire inside of your humidor, including any trays or dividers. • Place a glass of distilled water in the humidor for 72 hours. If patience isn't your strong suit, heat the distilled water in the microwave and place it inside the humidor for 24 hours. • Remove glass and use your humidor. The inner walls of the humidor have absorbed an acceptable amount of moisture. Don't stress out. The dry factor, moldy issues, and tobacco beetles can all be avoided by proper cigar humidor maintenance.
Now that I scared you into thinking you were going to lose your entire cigar collection, you deserve a break.... Pull out one of your perfectly stored cigars and enjoy a well-deserved smoke. I know I am!
