Maintaining Your Cigar Humidor Humidifier is Easy
Without your cigar humidor humidifier, say "goodbye" to your cigars. Granted, this may not be sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat stuff, but a cigar humidor humidifier is crucial for keeping your Gurkha cigar collection in top peak physical condition (wish I could say the same about me). There's nothing fancy here.... The most often used material is the inexpensive green foam found in the bottom of flower arrangements at the florist. This is extremely effective because of it's superior ability to retain moisture. The foam in a humidifier is usually enclosed in plastic.
These can be in various shapes, sizes, and colors. There are square ones, rectangular, round, stick shaped, etc.. The size and shape you choose will depend on how and where it fits in your humidor, and the amount of space and cigars it will be caring for. Attaching the humidifier to the inside of the lid or side of the humidor can be done by velcro or a thin metallic piece attached to the humidor, and a magnet attached to the back of the humidifier. The velcro or the magnetic materials are usually provided with your cigar humidifier. Whether you purchase your cigar humidor online or from your local retailer, not all cigar humidors come with a humidifier. If yours does, great. If it doesn't, make sure you get one designed to do the job. They don't cost much. Very Important.... When first using your cigar humidifier, I highly recommend you thoroughly moisten it with a propylene glycol solution, most commonly referred to as humidification solution. This is made up of 50% propylene glycol and 50% distilled water. Germicide should also be in this. Let the solution be thoroughly absorbed before turning it over and gently shaking out any excess. Wipe dry and place in humidor. The humidification solution will help prevent growth of bacteria and allow you to better regulate the environment. Do not use this solution more than once every 3-6 months. A good rule of thumb is to use it only when you have a dramatic change in seasonal temperatures. Excess use will result in a diminished capacity of your humidifier to properly maintain environment. Normal maintenance of your cigar humidor is done by adding only distilled water. Regular water has too many minerals and will choke your humidifier, eventually rendering it useless. There you go.... Now you can add "cigar humidor humidifier specialist" to your credentials!
